How to Steal Your Competitor’s Audience Using YouTube Ads
If you are interested in monetizing your YouTube content, there is a specific video hack that can help your profit margins. Profitability in YouTube is a function of views, but it is not always easy to elevate your videos over some prominent users.
This hack deals with the ad placement in Youtube. You can find that people who successfully target their viewers see major increases. By utilizing this hack, you will actually be getting a boost from your competitors.
How To Begin
This simple exercise can start by pressing a generic term in the YouTube search. In this example we are going to be using “DIY”. DIY, short for “do it yourself”, is a very common keyword that yields over 21 million results.
When you look at the top results, you are going to be seeing some of the most popular YouTube channels. To make your search easier, you can just hover your mouse over the channel to see how many subscribers it has. This can provide powerful insights into how much traffic a given channel will get.
To further refine your count, click on the filters tab. This tab should be readily visible and display certain filters which can help you sort the videos. Search by view count to see the most popular videos.
You will see that Bethany Mota is the top search result with over 7 million subscribers. It’s safe to say that this is an active YouTuber with plenty of views. In fact, she has one of the most popular channels on all of YouTube.
Below her channel page link we see a video “Play doh Scoops ‘n Treats”. It has over 62 million views! By clicking on this video I can see if there is advertising available.
Finding A Video
To see if we can use this channel for advertisements, we must click on a video. You may notice that there are other relevant ads to come up with a video. These are from savvy advertisers who know their target.
You will be able to notice whether a given video allows advertisements or not. This is important when discerning the videos value to your audience.
What To Look For
Once you have found the video you want to target, click the ‘more’ tab. From there you will notice there is a section called “statistics”. This section gives you many different metrics for the video.
You will also want to start to collect other channels of relevance. Make sure that they have an ability to turn ad revenue on. This generally should be obvious by the amount of advertising that they have on their channel.
Make sure that you select high profile YouTube accounts that have an audience that you wouldn’t mind snagging. There are also some good videos that come suggested on the right side of your screen. Collect all the videos that you are interested in using and put them in a notepad. This is going to be critical for later use.
Let’s go back to the main results for our search term “diy” and this time filter by “Channel”. Now YouTube filters channels that we can potentially target with our ads. The default results will appear under “Relevance” but we can also filter by “View Count” to see channels that have higher viewership.
Know Your Audience
Knowing your audience is important here. If you don’t know who your audience is, then diversify. This is a great opportunity for you to spread your content. As long as you are putting out high quality content, people will be interested in what you have to say.
Pay attention to the traffic statistics. How many views is this video going to get per day? Is it new content? Old content? Is the video still relevant? All of these questions are going to be important in answering which videos are best to choose.
If they appear to have content relevant to your offer then click on some of their videos to see if they have monetization available.
YouTube Video Ad Campaign
Once you have a list of videos you want to target, it’s time to create a YouTube video ad campaign. This campaign is actually done through Google Adwords, so you may have experience doing this kind of campaign before. The entire system is easy to manage, so you will get the hang of it if you are unfamiliar.
When you sign into your Adwords account, click “All video campaigns”. This will allow you to create a new campaign using the videos that you just highlighted.
Make sure to set a proper budget, you don’t want to invest more money than you have. You now have to select “YouTube Videos” under the delivery option.
You then get to choose which videos you want for your ad placement, this should be the easy part. Make sure that you give the user a place to click (such as a link) back to your site.
For purposes of data collection, make sure that you rotate evenly. This will ensure that you are able to see how your ad does with certain audiences. Collecting more data will help you make more effective ads in the future.
There is also an option that allows for how many times your ad is seen by a targeted user. You want there to be a reasonable frequency, but not so much that prospective customer gets annoyed from your ad.
You are going to want to use the “narrow your targeting” feature under “placements”
You can then paste all the urls that you collected. You now have everything you need to start the ad campaign.
Bidding And Tracking
Once you have all this completed, return to the bidding section. This will be critical to your revenue. You have to determine how much you are willing to pay for your advertising.
Now it’s time to track the campaign. This is the fun part. You get to compile all the data to see what works and what didn’t. There are plenty of different statistics on who clicked your ad. As you view all the different aspects of your campaign, make note of the videos that really seemed to draw attention.
Which parts of your business did you see expand? Were mobile views increased? This is all important in determining how successful you ad campaign was. There is a good chance that you stole a few viewers from the channel you were targeting. This is the “hack” part, you’ve just converted their viewers into your channel.
You Did It!
Congratulations, you have just run an ad campaign and started a crucial step to building your web presence and traffic. You will find sooner than later that you have plenty of new eyes on your content. From there, you will be able to build it all yourself. This is a fun process that you get to partake in.
