Social Media in Politics

What’s funny about politics is, while it’s controversial it is also social. If you like to argue then start a political debate with someone of the opposite persuasion. Politics is also very much a grass roots function of our culture and society. Now I am no political science professional so these are just observations that I’ve made of the past 5 years or so.

During Obama’s first campaign, face and name dominated the web. I couldn’t even check my email without seeing his face. In contrast McCain was nowhere to be found online. I guess they were too busy putting signs in the dirt.

After that experience of the Obama campaigns masterful execution of campaigning online the Romney camp took notice and during the 2012 elections there was much more presence by the Republicans online but still less that 10 TIMES the money spent than that of the Obama campaign!!! That’s insane and brilliant at the same time.

Now, I am not trying to start a fight with either side I just thought it was worth mentioning for those who didn’t notice it at all.

I just would like to know why people believe uneducated entertainers when it comes to politics and global events. They are uneducated, uninformed, and out of touch with the realities of everyday living…why do people listen to them???

Everyone has that distinct set of issues that they’re constantly thinking about regarding society and where we’re headed. Can you guys list (in no particular order) those ten things that are constantly on your mind? They don’t necessarily have to be the MOST DEVASTATING issues impacting our global society, but just the issues that you think about day in and day out. They can be as specific as you’d like.

    Here’s my list:

1.) The negative effects of capitalism (greed, overseas exploitation)/ corportization of American culture.. increasing presence of corporations in our everyday lives and cultural participation

2.) Cultural decadence (deterioration of morals, values, youth becoming more immoral)

3.) Irresponsible, sensationalist media (and the nasty effects it has on the people)

4.) Gang violence in Chicago (and the downfall of the black community)/ Commercial rap music (and it’s poisonous effects on the minds of young people – particularly black youth)

5.) Racism (and the way it benefits few, but cripples many)/ White privilege in the U.S.

6.) Reality TV and the way it’s diminishing our culture

7.) Widening wealth gap, shrinking middle class

8.) Infant politicians (political corruptness, and a pointless, ineffective congress who gets nothing done)/ engineered political polarization

9.) Money in politics (and the way it breaks out democratic system)

10.) Social media, technology and the way it’s disconnecting humanity

I’m really interested in your lists.

I’ve had it up to here with friends using FB as their own personal pulpit and/or soapbox. I swear, my news feed is awash with ridiculous conspiracy theories and impending notices of the Rapture (even before this most recent ridiculousness). Short of blocking or unfriending, what’s a social media addict to do?

Want to see what people think on this topic. When i say this, i mean affecting the world in terms of politics, culture and things like that. So don’t go and focus on American or any other region in specific, just events that have had a reach across the globe.
Some examples would be 9/11, rise of Social Media. Things like that…
A few other examples would be the Arab Spring, rise of China, War on Terror, but I fail to see how the Boxing Day Tsunami had a long lasting global impact, to me, it only seemed to affect the countries it hit, but if somebody thinks otherwise….explain

I am deciding to delete all myaccounts in social networking sites…. But i fear being completely lonely… I dont have friends in real life…Even if i delete no one going to care .. Honestly speaking.. There is no one interested in me in social media either…. So can you suggest me ways to live in real life . Moreover, i feel so unworthy and no clue what makes me happy. Pls i dont want to waste my youth …. I wanna live fully before i die…But dont wanna do anything immoral. I would be very much happy if you give your own idea of living a life to a young adult. Thanx

I’m writing a paper for psychology explaining how the media influences and attempts us how we should appear, like, and how we should act. And how religious beliefs and peers can be judgmental and opinionated if we’re homosexuals, overweight/obese, unequal rights for women and minorities.

I heard the revolution in Egypt called the “Facebook revolution,” and I’m not talking about a revolution in the US, but mobilizing and social activism through this medium.

Now I’m no Conservative hater. In fact I see myself as a Social Conservative myself so my views are not a million miles away from Palin’s. But every interview I’ve seen with her in she makes herself look so dumb it is unbelievable. I honestly never seen a politician more prone to embarrassing themselves when on air- even Bush is better. How did she ever get the position of Vice Presidential nominee?
